MCCDO sees the whole community of Kokstad thinking, acting and living in abundance!

We work to create resilient and purposeful communities that are consciously connected to the Spirit of 'Ubuntu' and the Earth. The MCCDO aims to forge interdependent and regenerative systems of productivity within the web of all life. The society we are building is one where all people co-operate, are free, inspired, nourished and educated; human dignity is respected and justice prevalent, we all live with complete responsibility, co-create and share wealth and live in peace. The MCCDO directs its projects and resources to these ends so that all people may live with purpose and thrive in abundance.

MCCDO has various innovative programmes and services which are all interconnected and aimed towards catalysing substantial community empowerment – a complete paradigm shift from the current community development status quo! The objectives of the MCCDO will be attained by carrying out the following activities:

  1. Invest in people empowerment, capacity building and leadership so as to enhance human dignity, personal responsibility, morals and ethics.

  2. Advance and disseminate knowledge and solutions that address the key challenges facing society.

  3. Develop ecological and regenerative community living, farming and food access systems.

  4. Manufacture, customize and transfer advanced open-design technologies to communities.

  5. Incubate and support entrepreneurial development.

  6. Promote a new social-economic operating system that is circular, open-source and sustainable; a model that enhances and integrates community, economy and ecology within a new framework of participatory engagement.

  7. Design communities based on the emerging and necessary paradigm of the Oxfam Doughnut model for a safe and just place for humanity; keeping social development within planetary boundaries on the local level.

  8. Advance a new model of North/South and South/South cooperation.

  9. Setup projects and programs which empower vulnerable groups in the community.

  10. Administer the Mount Currie Community Development Centre as an Open education and skills training resource base for the communities we serve.

  11. Work towards bring awareness about the co-dependence, entitlement, scarcity and competition syndrome and rather promote interdependence, responsibility, abundance and collaborative consciousness.

  12. Undertake in the promotion, organization and management of Kokstad Tourism Organisation in order to promote the advantages of the Kokstad region as a cultural, commercial, agricultural, civic and residential area and as a health and holiday destination, and to assist in the tourism development of its people and products.

The Mount Currie Community Development Centre is located 5km outside the town of Kokstad and is pioneering various innovative community development initiatives which include developing an Open University Access Platform, Regenerative Community Farming, building an open source ~ ‘makerspace’ ~ DIY Community Factory, supporting the growth of “K’Mali” and coordinating Kokstad Tourism.

MCCDO is linked into a Global Integrated Network of sovereign communities transitioning to sustainability, interdependence and abundance. The Centre operates on the premise of enhancing local wellbeing by hosting recreational events and sharing innovative information, fresh ideas, positive and sustainable development stories. This is done by screening award winning documentaries, running workshops & courses, hosting inspirational talks, facilitating P2P sharing events, organizing public lectures and coordinating practical demonstrations which can be emulated locally to incubate personal and community development, integrate diverse cultures and promote positive public progress.

We at MCCDO believe that a person is ‘certified by the community they serve’ and that only ‘applied knowledge is power’ so we encourage people to research & discern for themselves, think outside the current paradigm and participate in implementing solutions to our common global challenges at a local level. The information and education that one can access via the MCCDO Centre, is available to everybody, regardless of age, race, social economic status or political and spiritual affiliation.

Mountain View Farm is our blank canvas for the practical application of regenerative agricultural technology and sustainable community development theory. The farm borders Shayamoya (a low cost housing settlement 4664+RDP houses) and in partnership with EG Permaculture Co-operative Ltd. MCCDO is rolling out a comprehensive Permaculture Design that integrates the community of Kokstad into a regenerative agricultural enterprise.

THE INFORMATION AND INSPIRATION CENTRE Published by the Green Ambassadors on Aug 31, 2012

MCCDO is committed to building an inclusive and cohesive society where people with varied origins, histories, languages, cultures and religions express their individuality, respect and compliment each other's diversity and collaboratively thrive.  We promote the 'golden rule' of 'doing unto others as you would have done unto yourself" and are helping people take charge of their own localities, bridge intolerance, ignorance and misunderstandings, through positive stories and role models, so as to inspire people to become the change they want to see.

In alignment with the National Summit on Social Cohesion and Nation Building 2012, MCCDO represents and engages with all the diverse people in the district: black, white and brown, women and men, rich and poor, young and old, urban and rural, speaking different languages, with a mixture of beliefs, coming from many different places, seeking to fulfill the injunction of South Africa's constitution "Diverse people's unite."

Kokstad is a fractal of international diversity and the MCCDO is strategically positioned to implement various activities and programs that foster social and cultural understanding and cohesion. No community can survive and flourish if the mass of our people remain in poverty, without access to land and without tangible prospects for a better life. As representatives of all walks of the district society, the MCCDO is determined to help cultivate a society where everyone is free and interdependent with synergistic relationships that embrace each person’s full potential. We are proud to be part of a community that cares.
